Elevate, Theater for Health
based in New York City
Elevate Theatre Company creates public programs that combine newly commissioned plays about important public health topics with public education. The topics of their plays have included reproductive justice, mental health, gun violence and the political polarization of the country. The theatre company’s performances are followed by Q&A with panels of experts working in the public health fields relevant to the play. Elevate Theatre Company’s attempt to improve the public’s health through dialogue, access to information, and resources is purposeful and creative.
Elevate strives to bring their work to a broad audience across the U.S. -- both in-person and virtually. Young people are a high priority. Elevate actively seeks out opportunities to work with schools of medicine and nursing to support the education of the next generation of healthcare professionals. Elevate has worked with the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, the Duke University Armstrong Scholars, and the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Humanistic Medicine Department. In addition, Elevate supports organizations targeting teens and undergraduates including Teen EmPower! and the IAC Fellows with plays about sexual health and storytelling workshops.
In 2024, Elevate will use its Creativity Foundation grant to develop its newest play, LINE to Hope, helping get it through the phases of writing (Playwright Retreat), development and feedback (Development Reading) and an in-person performance (Celebration of Playwrights). In doing so, Elevate will build community and enrich the lives of artists and audiences with accurate, well-developed theatrical pieces.
