Mamelodi Initiative
based in Mamelodi Township, South Africa
The Mamelodi Initiative provides educational resources and opportunities to young people in Mamelodi Township while building local leadership. The Mamelodi Initiative effectively fosters the curiosity and imagination of the youth it works with -- helping empower them to be change-makers.
A deep grassroots commitment is reflected in Mamelodi Initiative’s support of not only the youth it serves, but also its volunteers, staff, and (community. Strong partnerships with schools have led to an increase in youth participating in programs that strengthen math and English skills, teach leadership and community organizing skills, and combat learning loss that occurs over the summer and holidays. A partnership with the University of Pretoria brings youth on campus for computer literacy programming and for access to computers and stable internet. Mamelodi Initiative also collaborates with counselors to provide social support for learners, many whom have challenges in their home lives.
The range of programming and supports offered is impressive. And it is a testament to Mamelodi Initiative that many of its volunteers, staff and interns are returning Mamelodi Initiative learners.
In the coming year, Mamelodi Initiative will use its Creativity grant to build staff expertise in operations and finances by hiring an experienced Operations and Financial Director for two years. This step will ensure new funding opportunities adhere to complex reporting and compliance guidelines and continue to enhance the long-term sustainability of Mamelodi Initiative.
The Mamelodi Initiative was the brainchild of Creativity Foundation Legacy winner Richard Kelley.
