Free Black Chesapeake Project
Chelsea Dee Harrison/playwright
Playwright Chelsea Dee Harrison, a Creativity Foundation Legacy winner, has a strong track record of creating public programs that combine an exploration of history with the creation of new art. The Creativity Foundation liked the fact that Chelsea Dee makes theater and art-making accessible, fun, and consciousness raising.
The Creativity Foundation grant will be used to develop the project Free Black Chesapeake. It will be a public program that involves an intergenerational cohort of learners and creatives in Washington, DC, guiding them through the process of creating art that meditates on what it might have been like to live in Free Black Chesapeake in the 18th and 19th centuries. This month-long cohort will culminate in a public sharing of their art and a Chesapeake food history experience.
